Trauma Counseling

Going through a traumatic experience can be extremely unnerving and distressing. Sometimes, you go through a shock that’s so intense you’re left mentally and emotionally crippled and paralyzed by the trauma. If you’re unsure how to move on from your experience, trauma counseling can help.

What is trauma?

Trauma is an emotional reaction to a horrific incident. Shock and disbelief are common shortly after the event. Unpredictable thoughts, hallucinations, tense relationships, and even clinical effects such as headaches or nausea are longer-term responses. It affects us differently. It can be subtle, insidious, or outright destructive.

Although these emotions are natural, you may have difficulty moving forward with your life. How an event affects you depends on many factors, including your character, the nature of the traumatic event, the intensity of the trauma, and its socio-cultural factors related to you. If you are experiencing this, you need the support of one of our therapists and counselors and discover positive ways of managing your feelings.

What are the causes of trauma?

Traumatic events often involve a danger to life or wellbeing. But even though it does not include physical injury, any circumstance that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and lonely will result in trauma. It is not the quantitative conditions that decide when an incident is disruptive, but the subjective emotional perception of the occurrence. The more scared and defenseless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatized.

Trauma can be triggered by:

  • One-time incidents, such as an accident, injury, or a violent assault, mostly if the incident was accidental or happened during childhood.
  • Continuous, constant stress, such as living in a crime-ridden community, fighting a life-threatening illness, or witnessing frequent traumatic incidents, such as bullying, domestic abuse, or neglect in childhood.
  • Commonly missed triggers, such as surgery, the unexpected demise of a loved one, the dissolution of a serious relationship, or a humiliating or profoundly disappointing encounter, mainly if someone was intentionally cruel.

Psychological trauma will impact your life for several years. It’s not a quickly resolved concern, especially if you try to do it on your own. Trauma counseling has proved valuable in helping patients transcend the anxiety, suffering, and instability that emerge with the most overwhelmingly threatening events you have been through.

ThoughtWise can help you make healing improvements and get on with your life.
