Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Assessment for Children
Is your child struggling with being hyperactive, or overly impulsive, or is your child struggling to maintain a reasonable amount of attention or memory? Have you been referred to us for your child to be assessed for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder or ADHD?
In the U.S. surveys have concluded that about 1 in 20 children have been diagnosed with ADHD. Attention disorders are mostly identified under three major domains: inattentive, impulsive/hyperactive, and combined (inattentive and impulsive/hyperactivity type) ADHD.
What does child ADHD mean for me and my child?
ADHD can present in children and adults. Often when ADHD is treated in childhood the severity of the ADHD may be minimized or may disappear by the time their child matures into adulthood. This makes adequate and competent testing, intervention, and treatment very important.
A child that has ADHD may be suffering, and their life may too suffer in many ways. Childhood ADHD may include symptoms of ranging severity of:
- Aggression.
- Hostile interactions or behavior.
- Restlessness.
- Anxiety.
- Inability to relax or harness control.
- Oppositional behavior.
- Lack of empathy.
- Difficulties in learning or social engagement.
- Inability to organize.
- High energy levels.
- Lack of inhibition.
What can be done about ADHD nowadays?
Surprising modern-day interventions involve evidence-based approaches and new abilities to intervene with the major symptoms of ADHD. As some children may be medicated, many models and interventions of therapy are highly important.
Modern-day treatments may involve giving focus to important areas of the child’s life through counseling, 1:1 talk therapy, group therapy, and even online delivery of therapy such as telehealth and homework.
Essential or foundational applications or exercises in therapy for a child with ADHD may focus on:
- Teaching coping skills.
- Biofeedback -training them to use or recognize their physiological functioning to mitigate symptoms.
- Neurofeedback – training the child to use their brain and brain waves to mitigate difficulties and symptoms, or to increase their ability to relax and focus.
- Training them to build skills in certain areas such as:
- Self-awareness.
- Self-acceptance.
- Inhibition.
- Improve judgment.
- Learning active listening skills.
- Ability to shift or be flexible.
