Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Counseling

ADHD Treatment to Help your Kids Through School and Life

Do you think your child has ADHD? It’s not impossible. Kids are inherently active little creatures. They just want to jump around and play all day. They have a hard time behaving and following orders. But if you feel like your kid is just a tad too much than most kids, consider taking them for ADHD evaluation and ADHD treatment.

As parents, you are often the first to notice anything unusual with your kid. Getting them help as soon as you can is essential in helping them live a happy and healthy life.

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is a mental health disorder characterized by abnormally high hyperactivity and impulsive behaviors. It is often diagnosed during early childhood when the kid starts showing the symptoms, but it lasts until adulthood.

ADHD is more than just the inability to focus, finish a task, or pay attention. There are three types of ADHD. These are:

  • Predominantly Inattentive: This is when you hard time paying attention to details, finishing tasks, or following instructions. Forgetfulness is also a hallmark symptom for this type of ADHD, which is most common in girls.
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-impulsive: The symptoms of this type include talking a lot, fidgeting, inability to sit still for an extended period, does things without thinking it through, and restlessness.
  • Combined Presentation: The most common type of ADHD. It is a combination of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

ADHD is one of the most misdiagnosed mental disorders of all time. It is crucial to get a comprehensive evaluation from an expert ADHD psychiatrist before jumping to treatment.

Like most mental disorders, the cause of ADHD remains unknown. However, research suggests that genetics plays a role.

ADHD in Adults

ADHD in adults is more challenging to diagnose because it is more subtle. It overlaps with other mental health issues such as anxiety and mood disorders. Adults with ADHD are those who had ADHD as children but were never diagnosed or have carried it on as they got older.

The symptoms of ADHD in adults are the same as in kids. Inability to focus and prioritize, missing deadlines at school and work, bouts of anger, forgetfulness, unstable relationships, impulsiveness, and restlessness are the common symptoms. Click here to learn more about the symptoms of ADHD.

ThoughtWise ADHD Treatment Center

There is no cure for ADHD. However, there are plenty of available treatments to help manage the symptoms and improve function.

The type of ADHD your child may have determines the kind of treatment they will be getting. However, it is commonly treated with medication, therapy, education, or a combination of all three.

For younger children (4-5 years old) and those with milder cases, behavioral therapy and parent education are the recommended first line of treatment before introducing medications.

For moderate to severe cases, medications are the first line of treatment as they help reduce the symptoms. Therapy is then often added to the treatment plan to help families cope better with the disorder’s challenges. ThoughtWise offers online therapy for ADHD to those who can’t come into our office.

Individual and parent education play a huge role in the management of ADHD. At ThoughtWise, we educate the kid and their families on healthier ways of responding to the situations and behaviors, and deal with the frustration.
