Person-Centered Therapy
Are you interested in the essence and heart of 1:1 talk therapy? Do you need someone to hear your story? Would you benefit from hearing your own story? Hearing your own words and narrative your experience? Are you interested in working with a specialist that specializes in your mental health and focuses on practicing empathy?
What is Person-Centered Therapy?
Person-centered therapy is a major treatment application in counseling, we take pride in specializing in person-centered therapy here at Thoughtwise.
The essence of person-centered therapy is building a therapeutic relationship with a counselor, and being invited to the world of your therapist’s silent moments, unconditional positive regard, the ability to hear yourself, to be listened to, to be allowed the time and therapeutic environment to digest your experiences and to reflect your life and your problems.
One major principle exercised in person-centered therapy is that the client should not be reduced to a diagnosis, where their sense of self and personhood is valued.
The person-centered approach to therapy is one of the foundational forms of effective 1:1 talk therapy. This type of therapy allows you to find your own niche and place in your life and treatment. Person-centered therapy is based on self-healing.
At the foundation of talk therapy is the therapeutic relationship between you, your experiences, and your therapist.
This type of therapy silently promotes for you to approach treatment and wellness in therapy by putting words to your story, and describing your life, obstacles, hopes, and narratives to your therapist. Through this process, healing takes place by you becoming your true self. This approach to your treatment and wellness contains the least amount of direction from your therapist, they spend valuable time with you, listening to what you have to say.
The direction of therapy is dependent on you and this is identified as “self-actualization.” You as the client are the driving force behind this type of therapy.
People that are capable of self-actualization have been identified as:
- Accepting.
- Honest
- Autonomous.
- Genuine.
- Self-directed.
- Self-aware.
- Capable of growing by reflecting on their experiences.
How does Person-Centered Therapy work?
In this type of therapy, your therapist strives to be present for you no matter what you are going through.
You may notice your therapist spending time listening to you and being:
- Present for you and your experiences.
- Caring and genuine.
- Supportive and by demonstrating active listening skills.
- Emotion-focused.
- Aware of your state of being.
- Supportive to your own transformation at your own speed.
Person-Centered Therapy has been used as an effective treatment for many problems that you may be seeking therapy for, including optimizing your life and health.
Some people may need the person to person interaction as a means of support and understanding.
