Grief Counseling

Grief Counseling in Tallahassee. Guiding you through the grieving process.

Losing something or someone hurts. It’s the kind of pain that you would only know if you have been through it. It can get so painful sometimes that you don’t know what to do with yourself. You are overwhelmed with grief. You feel sad, hollow, and empty, and broken. Like someone took away a huge part of you, and now you can’t live without it. There’s a void inside of you now that you can’t fill, and you don’t know if you can ever fill it back up again. You are suddenly filled with overwhelming emotions of sadness, guilt, and regret. You can’t help but just cry and even wail. As if it’s the only thing to do. The only was to express the pain. To let it all out.

When grief starts affecting your daily life and functions, grief counseling can help you process the grief and cope with the loss.

What is grief?

Grief is a natural response to a loss, whether it’s the death of a loved one, loss of a job or a relationship, moving to a different country, leaving family members behind, or being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Grief can manifest in many different ways. Some people withdraw from their peers and family, others get angry, and some turn to alcohol and other self-destructive behavior. Others succumb to depression when the pain of the loss has been prolonged for too long without help.

Grieving is a process that should take its natural course. It shouldn’t be rushed. In 1969, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross identified the five stages of grief as:

  • Denial – Denial is the first stage of the grieving process. It is a coping mechanism activated because of the initial shock. You try to block out the reality of the situation or deny what is happening. It’s essentially the ‘this isn’t happening’ stage.
  • Anger – Anger is the emotional response to your frustration with what has happened. It is a natural reaction to the pain of the loss.
  • Bargaining – Bargaining is the stage when we try to take control of what has happened and start believing that there was and is something that we could and could have done. This is the “if only” stage.
  • Depression – Depression is a typical response to loss and is usually the longest stage. It’s when the devastation of the loss really hits you.
  • Acceptance – The final stage of grieving, acceptance, is when you start feeling okay about your loss and come to terms with what has happened.

The grieving process is not linear. You can go through any of the stages anytime and revisit a stage at any point in your life, even years after the loss. Click here to learn more about the five stages of grief.
