What does it mean that I had a stroke?

A stroke is also called a CVA or cerebral vascular accident. A stroke is an interruption to blood flow to the brain, this damages brain tissue, and thus affects brain functioning. This helps us understand how severe the event truly is.

There are two types of stroke:

  • Ischemic – blockage of blood flow to brain tissue, not enough blood flows to the brain. The more commonly occurring type around 85 of 100 strokes are this type.
  • Hemorrhagic – Rupture of a blood vessel in the brain.
