We offer and specialize in treating or assessing children ages 6 and up, adults, and the geriatric population. In certain situations, all of these populations may be in need of undergoing a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation.

What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

Neuropsychological is a big word that refers to the relationship between your brain, your critical thinking skills and your behavior.

A comprehensive neuropsychological exam is a more in-depth testing than the initial neuropsychological screening process.

The screening process takes only a few minutes, where a comprehensive neuropsychological exam, examines you or your loved one much more closely and tests your:

  • Alertness/focus.
  • Performance.
  • Calculation.
  • Attention.
  • Construction.
  • Memory.
  • Learning.
  • Language and communication abilities.
  • Cognition and problem-solving.
  • Brain functioning.
  • Behavioral functioning.
  • Current state of health.

What does a neuropsychological evaluation test for?

A neuropsychological evaluation is a compound form of testing. This type of evaluation can test for, identify, or provide evidence for the diagnosis of:

  • The onset of a neurocognitive disorder.
  • Major neuropsychological symptoms or presentations.
  • Recognized conditions or disorders such as:
    • ADHD
    • Intellectual disorders or disability.
    • Communication disorders.
    • Specific learning disorder.
    • Developmental disorders.
    • Different types of brain damage.
    • Traumatic brain injury.
    • Mental illness.
    • Dementia.
    • Degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s Disease.
    • Psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia.
    • Exposure to toxic chemicals.
    • Other diagnoses, prognosis, or the development or presence of many other disorders that interrupt the brain-behavior interaction.

What does this type of test consist of? How long will it take?

Many neuropsychological evaluations are conducted already matched with you or your loved one’s complaints or presenting issues. Some tests may take a few days to complete.

These tests may ask for you to participate by:

  • Fulfilling a background questionnaire.
  • Writing, with eyes closed or open.
  • Repeat sounds or phrases.
  • Identify sensations or identify shapes by holding them.
  • Demonstrating memory skills, such as repeating a series of words.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of spoken phrases or metaphors.
  • Demonstrating visual, hearing, speaking, and rhythmic abilities.
  • Ability to perform motor tasks such as tapping your fingers together at a certain rate.
