Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)

Are you in need of some type of therapy or treatment, and are you searching for the type of therapy that is best for your life? There are so many different types of therapy that you can partake in. Are you ready to focus on your irrational beliefs and begin to adopt thinking that is more reasonable and effective for your goals?

If detrimental thought and emotional disturbance is something that you or a loved one is struggling with, rational emotive behavior therapy or REBT may be the right therapy approach for you and your therapist at Thoughtwise.

What is Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)?

Quite often people get stuck in emotional disturbances or disturbing thought patterns because they fall into believing that their state or condition is bound on them. REBT is an approach to help free you from these thoughts and from these types of “auto-pilot” thinking habits.

REBT can be the basis of 1:1 counseling, group counseling, or even telehealth/at-distance counseling during the Covid-19 pandemic. This therapy can be used as a primary intervention and prevention method for young children, and it can help adults at any age, begin to adopt better attitudes, and effective cognition and thinking.

REBT helps you look at some important areas of your life such as:

  • Thinking patterns. What are your most common automatic thoughts? Do you ever challenge these thoughts?
  • Irrational beliefs. Are there any areas that your thinking is unhelpful to you?
  • Acceptance and health. What would happen in your life if you adopted an unconditional acceptance to the way that you are?
  • Dysfunctional behaviors. When your behaviors are dysfunctional, what are the thoughts that go along with this?
  • The cycle of your thinking and behaviors. How do my emotions influence my thoughts? How do my thoughts influence my behaviors?
  • Disputing irrational thoughts. Can I change my thinking the next time I am emotional?

REBT is a modality in therapy that can help you leverage with issues such as:

  • Depression.
  • Anxiety.
  • Emotional disturbance.
  • Addiction.
  • Irrational behaviors.
  • Irrational beliefs.
  • Self-defeating thoughts and behaviors.

REBT is known to be an effective and beneficial treatment for many reasons. One of the reasons that this type of therapy is so popular is that it offers you an experience in therapy that is unmatched.

How does REBT work?

Some of the practices and techniques that you might participate in are that of:

  • Role-playing. Acting in therapy, to role-play situations that will happen in the future.
  • Rational emotive imagery. Taking time to imagine certain situations, and describing your feelings, thoughts, and emotions to your therapist.
  • Bibliotherapy. Reading in therapy or at home to learn about therapeutic topics.
  • Relaxation exercises. Talking about the difficulties that you have or the feelings that you associate with trying to calm yourself during circumstances that are difficult for you.

If you recognize the benefit that REBT may offer you or your loved one, please contact us about an upcoming appointment.
