Logotherapy
How important is our philosophy of life to our health? Have you found your purpose? To you today, what is the meaning of life? These questions may have never crossed your mind before, but what thoughts or feelings do you get from them? These are questions and concepts that are discovered when working with a therapist in logotherapy. If these questions illicit a response from you, logotherapy may be a process that you may benefit from pursuing, regardless of if you have pursued counseling in the past. Overall, logotherapy focus’s on choosing one’s attitude and determing an individual’s motivation for living.
What is Logotherapy?
Logotherapy is a scientifically-based form of psychotherapy that entails working with a logotherapist to investigate and communicate your personal thoughts and feelings while working towards identifying the deeper meaning of your life. Logotherapy works to reveal thoughts, feelings, and perspectives that you may not be consciously aware of through introspection and intentional focus on your thoughts, feelings, and on finding meaning withing yourself and your life.
Logo therapy places an emphasis on strengthening the ‘spirit’ of an individual through three techniques called dereflection, paradoxical intention, and Socratic dialogue.
Dereflection is intended to help you focus less intensely on yourself and more on the perspectives of others. The goal of this is to reduce hyper-reflection, or intense focus or repetition of negative thoughts and anxiety inducing ideas and beliefs.
Paradoxical intention asks you to open up to the idea of what you fear most. This technique was originally created to help combat negative feelings created by anxiety and phobias, but can be used toward any area of your life where you are experiencing fear and anxiety. By setting any intention to do or explore the thought causing fear, the fear itself becomes reduced.
Lastly, Socratic dialogue was designed to help you gain clarity toward yourself by focusing more closely on your own words. Your therapist will listen closely during your sessions, reiterate your thought patterns and ideas, and help you identify the greater meaning in the thoughts you express during therapy.
