It’s common to have sleeping problems sometimes. If you’re a new mom adjusting to your baby’s schedule or you’re stressed with work, it can be difficult to sleep or get a good sleep. But when you’re sleeping problem becomes a frequent occurrence, it could already be a sleep disorder.
Sleep disorders refer to sleeping problems that affect the quality, duration, and timing of your sleep on a regular basis. If not managed and treated, sleep disorders can have a lasting impact not just on your health but life in general as well. The constant feeling of tiredness even after a good amount of sleep and sleep deprivation can impact your work, relationships, and emotional well-being. It is essential to seek help when you notice that your sleep problems are getting worse and more frequent. There are sleep disorders that can be life-threatening. Not just to you but the people around you.
What are the types of sleep disorders?
There are several types of sleeping disorders. The causes of sleep disorders vary per type, as well. Some of the most common are:
Insomnia is the recurring inability to fall asleep and stay asleep. It is often caused by anxiety, stress, hormones, and a side effect of medications. People with insomnia also report excessive sleepiness during the daytime, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and impaired performance at school or work. Sometimes, it also leads to depression.
There are three types of insomnia:
- Chronic, regularly recurring insomnia for at least a month
- Intermittent insomnia that occurs regularly
- Transient lasts for a few nights at a time
Sleep apnea is characterized by temporary pauses in breathing while asleep. This jerks the person to wake up gasping for air. Heavy snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea.
There are two types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. The first one is due to tissue blocking the airway space. The second occurs because the brain stops sending the muscles that control your breathing to work. Sleep apnea can be life-threatening and should be resolved once noticed.
Narcolepsy is characterized by “sleep attacks” that occur while you are awake. It’s feeling drained to the point that you fall asleep without warning. This can be dangerous especially if it happens while you are driving or in the middle of something that requires being alert.
Parasomnia is a term used for abnormal behaviors that occur during sleep. This includes sleepwalking, night terrors, teeth grinding, REM sleep behavior disorder, sleep paralysis, and nightmare disorder.
Restless Leg Syndrome is that overwhelming urge to move your legs. This usually happens at night as you’re about to rest.
Identifying the type of sleep disorder you have is important in getting the right treatment.
