Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Are you the type of person that gets stuck in a rut? That gets into a system and finds it hard to get out? Are you trying to do something big with your life, but are having problems making the changes that you need to succeed?

What is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)?

Solution-focused brief therapy or (SFBT) is a post-modern approach to counseling and treatment that focuses on a brief amount of time in therapy and attends to building the solutions around your problems.

SFBT uses positive psychology and major philosophies that help you solve problems fast. Counseling and talk therapy is known to be a therapeutic process that can really get your life moving in the right direction. SFBT holds great groundwork in how therapy can help you change your psychology and your thinking to make changes in your life.

SFBT helps you find your way out of an impasse or the feelings of being stuck, by helping you identify:

  • What you focus on may be what you produce.
  • What you are doing right.
  • How you can plan and change your behaviors.
  • Exceptions to your problem.
  • Rapid ways to make a change.
  • Small things that you can do to make big changes for the better.
  • Sources of hope.
  • Your response to building yourself up.
  • Multiple ways to solve your problems.

How does Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Work?

Treatment and counseling in SFBT allow you to use your therapist to help you solve your problems fast, whether you are having problems with your thinking, emotion, or behaviors.

When people are suffering, often it is hard for them to identify anything that is going right for them.

Some of the major approaches in solution-focused brief therapy are to identify the thinking and behaviors that you are already doing that can lead to solutions to your problems. Sometimes minor changes lead to the desired outcomes in your life.

Your therapist that practices solution-focused brief therapy helps you understand:

  • Modest goals may lead to changes in behavior.
  • Problems are only a reality.
  • Focusing on solutions rather than problems is helpful.
  • Negative habits may mean that you are getting further from your goals.
  • When you know what is working, do more of it.
  • When you know what is not working, do less of it.
  • Sometimes small movements are all that it takes to change your life.

Time with your counselor in SFBT is wisely spent, and treatment is designed to be only a short amount of time. Throughout therapy, your treatment may only last 8-10 sessions.

Throughout your counseling, you will reach five major milestones:

  1. Talk about your problems.
  2. Set goals.
  3. Identify when these problems were not present, and what caused these problems.
  4. Build an understanding of what can be done to solve these issues.
  5. Reach better solutions.
