Self-Acceptance Training

Has self-acceptance been a problem for you lately? Are you struggling with barriers in your life while being unable to forgive yourself? Is the inability to become aligned with yourself causing you problems across different areas of your life?

Self-acceptance and self-care are becoming popular areas for prevention and treatment in mental health today, as self-acceptance is important for a growth mindset, and for the ability to let things go and to be resilient.

What is Self-Acceptance Training?

Self-acceptance training is an approach to therapy that asks for you to focus on your self-worth and the depths and levels of your personal experiences, now in the moment, and in the past.

Self-acceptance can be an important area of therapy and your health if you are dealing with issues stemming from:

  • Self-confidence.
  • Shame/embarrassment.
  • Lack of self-awareness.
  • Reactive anxiety.
  • Reactive depression.
  • Traumatic experiences.
  • The abundance of stress.
  • Inability to be and not do.
  • Being overly judgmental about yourself or others.

How does Self-Acceptance Training Work?

This kind of intervention or treatment can be delivered in 1:1 therapy or group therapy. Sometimes this kind of training is offered in a workshop.

The goals of this kind of therapeutic-based training are to gain:

  • Mindfulness of the effects that a traumatic experience has had on you.
  • Forgiveness and openness.
  • Mental flexibility.
  • A sense of self-reflection.
  • The ability to adopt new beliefs about yourself.
  • The ability to detach from memories or past experiences.
  • Skills in mental awareness.
  • Self-regulation and tolerance skills.
  • A sense of self-discovery and self-evaluation.
  • Practice self-care with or without your therapist.

Some of the methods used in self-acceptance training may include a type of hypnosis or reaching a trance-like state. These “trances” or relaxation states are meant to separate any harsh judgment that you have on yourself and allow you to become more open for a period of time.

During training, you may explain certain events or circumstances that have happened in the past, in order to be able to reappraise, digest, and better evaluate these experiences.

During this experience, you may be prompted to allow for a renewed sense of acceptance and growth. This type of exposure in self-acceptance training with your therapist may allow you to learn how to detach or let go of painful or traumatic experiences.

Self-acceptance training may also teach you skills in:

  • Insight into your experiences.
  • A renewed sense of narrative.
  • Self-efficacy.
  • Self-worth.
  • Self-observation.
  • Imagery.
  • Experiential processing.

The major purpose of applying yourself and becoming involved in a self-acceptance therapy or workshop is to find your own unique approach to forgiving yourself, accepting yourself in ways that you have not been able to do before and to minimize the suffering that you feel from your past experiences.

While self-care is something that can seriously increase your positive feelings and health, self-acceptance training invites you to find a better sense of acceptance of your genuine self.
