What is MS?
MS is defined as an autoimmune condition in which the immune system destroys segments of myelin throughout the brain or nervous system.
There are three different types of MS:
- Relapsing and remitting: When symptoms and recovery fluctuate.
- Secondary progressive: When fluctuations of recovery minimize, and symptoms progress.
- Primary progressive: When symptoms progress from the beginning.
Some things you should know about an MS diagnosis:
- Myelin is a fatty-like substance that protects your neurons, it increases the efficiency of the signals that your body tells itself.
- These signals allow you to move, think, and do many other things.
- Neurons are cells that transmit commands throughout your brain and body.
- Your body depends on neurons to operate.
- If myelin is damaged, plaques may form around the neuron.
- If neurons or myelin are damaged, your body may not work exactly how you are telling it to.
- Direct connections made in your body may be distorted.
- The symptoms or difficulties stemming from MS may come and go.
