Infidelity Counseling
Infidelity cuts deep. You lose trust and confidence, and it may feel like you can never trust again. But you can heal, with the right tools and in time.
If you have never been cheated on, you’ll never really know the pain of the betrayal. It hurts so much you start feeling it in your bones. Experiencing infidelity can feel nauseating, mind-numbing, and humiliating for the partner whose trust has been broken. You may feel like a wave of shock just coursed through your body and got stuck there. You’re paralyzed and don’t know what to do. Is this for real? Is this really happening? And you know it is, but your brain refuses to believe it. It refuses to process it and make sense of it. So you think about it more and more, and then it sinks in. You feel defeated, betrayed and unsure of what to do next.
Repairing your relationship after an affair may feel impossible, but with the right support, dedication, and guidance from a relationship counselor you can both navigate the aftermath of infidelity and begin to rebuild trust in each other. For any relationship to flourish, trust and commitment are essential. Both of you must feel safe and secured in your relationship. With proper communication, the right mediation, and mindset, couples counseling can help you can repair the broken trust and even improve your relationship.
Causes and Effects of Infidelity
People cheat for different reasons. It’s not always because they have fallen out of love or are unhappy with the relationship. There are other causes of infidelity. Some cheat simply because they had the opportunity. Others cheat because of sex addiction, boredom, depression, avoidance of parenting problems, or even out of resentment and revenge. Being cheated on is a traumatic experience. You develop mistrust and anxiety, wonder what the other person is doing, who they are with all the time. You start having self-esteem issues, always wondering if you are enough. You may self-blame and wonder if there was anything you can do to have prevented it. Sometimes, it can even lead to depression. It’s hard to be at this end of the stick. But we also have to accept that the partner who cheated is also affected by what happened. And although you may want to punish and hate them for what they have done, there are healthier ways of recovering from infidelity. The partner who cheated is also subject to emotional turmoils caused by overwhelming guilt. Left unchecked, it can also lead to anxiety and depression.
