Comprehensive testing is also recommended to assess the individual’s neurodevelopmental abilities, neuropsychology (motor and sensory functioning and cognition), and psychology. At Thoughtwise we are specialists that readily conduct these types of evaluations.

Mental Health and Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a condition in which a person shows neurological, physiological, and physical differences from a typically developing child. A child with down syndrome may show a lag in developmental processes, exhibit language delays, deficits in memory, and some severity of cognitive impairment.

Often a family and child are required to have a child tested for cognitive and learning difficulties or disorders in order for the child to receive benefits, accommodations, waivers, and/or free special education programs.

Cognitive impairment, issues in memory, and lag in developmental processes can be major topics focused on in treatment and counseling therapies. Mental health and mental health issues are also relevant to the family of an individual and the child in which has been diagnosed with down syndrome.

Some of the common mental health issues that can be linked or related to a child’s diagnosis of Down Syndrome can include therapy, counseling, and mental health intervention to address:

  • The need for assessment, IQ/intelligence testing, or observational monitoring and comprehensive evaluations.
  • Skill sets in:
    • Language and comprehension.
    • Adaptive abilities and social skills.
    • Activities of daily living.
    • Coping skills.
  • ADHD.
  • Anxiety.
  • Depression.
  • Emotional difficulties.
  • Behavioral disturbances.
  • Specific neuropsychological issues, among others.

Many times, mental health interventions are key for early intervention and ongoing maintenance and training with individuals with down syndrome. These early interventions can be specialized and ongoing throughout a person’s life. Therapeutic intervention can bring additional benefits to your quality of health and life.
