Couples Therapy

Sometimes, you need another person’s unbiased perspective to help you and your partner figure things out, especially when you’ve come to a point where no one really hears each other. You still love each other, but it’s getting harder each day. You keep on fighting over the pettiest things. You stop talking to each other for days, then make up, only to fight again a few days later. It’s exhausting and draining.

Couples Therapy is not only meant for people who are married. There is couple’s therapy for boyfriends and girlfriends too. It is for all couples who are experiencing turmoil in their relationship and have a hard time deciding if they should keep the relationship. Although it is focused on the couple, some issues may be deeper than expected. For instance, you may have personal psychological problems that are being projected and displacing onto the relationship. A good example of this is you and your partner are having issues with superiority and inferiority; you always end up fighting over petty issues. It may be possible that each individual has past experiences from childhood or past relationships where they lost a sense of self and empowerment and are trying to reclaim it. Other issues include financial problems, major transitions like being transferred to a different country or state because of their jobs, infidelity, and illness.

Couples therapy exercises

In couple’s therapy at ThoughtWise, both parties will learn how to communicate peacefully and productively. Our team of thoughtful, insightful and wise mental health professionals designed it to improve problem-solving and identifying common life goals. There are activities you can do at home as well to supplement the therapy.

Couple’s therapy home exercises:

  1. Create a bucket list of activities you haven’t done as a couple before or activities you have been brushing aside due to a busy work routine schedule.
  2. Decide on the 2-2-2 rule. Every two weeks, you go out on a dinner date. Every two months, you decide to go out to a party. And every two years, you plan a vacation to somewhere you both haven’t been before.
  3. Don’t go to bed until all arguments have been resolved. It seems easy, but it can be difficult without having to use force. Give space if space is needed. So you can both relax and gather your thoughts. Writing it down and exchanging letters of honesty at the end of the day can also be an excellent alternative to avoid violent conflict.
  4. Identifying and eliminate stress triggers. Believe it or not, seeing clutter, unwashed dishes, and piles of soiled clothes scattered around the house can trigger stress, which cascades into unwanted altercations. Take initiative and do not hesitate to ask if your partner needs help. AND if help is offered, do not hesitate to take it.
