Attention Disorder Counseling

Attention Disorders and Treatment

If you are suffering from an attention disorder, it may feel like your mind and thoughts will not allow you to be present in the moment, you may feel unable to cope at times. You may be seriously struggling with distraction, behaviors, and impulsiveness

In 2011, around 10.2% of all children in Florida were diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed attention disorder.

Attention disorders are mostly identified under three major domains: inattentive, impulsive/hyperactive, and combined (inattentive and impulsive/hyperactivity type) ADHD.

Inattentive

Some of those signs or symptoms you may experience as a child or an adult under the domain of ADHD and inattention are that of:

  • Failing to give or apply proper attention to certain areas of your life.
  • Not listening or inability to learn.
  • Attentional blindness.
  • Attentional rigidity/inflexibility.
  • Unable to shift attention.
  • Lack of engagement with others.
  • Lack of awareness of previous topics talked about.
  • Difficulty or inability to retain information, often, and readily.

The signs and symptoms of ADHD can affect:

  • Behaviors.
  • Relationships.
  • Schoolwork.
  • Life at home
  • Self-regulation.

Experiencing any of these symptoms can make simple communication and interactions extremely difficult tasks. If you are affected by the implications of ADHD, you may also be struggling with:

  • Excessive attention.
  • Rebellious behaviors.
  • Maintaining agreements and relationships.
  • Organization.

You may struggle with your child that has an ADHD diagnosis, and especially if your child has not been diagnosed and has not received adequate treatment. At ThoughtWise, we can assist with the entire process from seeing your child, diagnosing prominent issues, as well as introducing new treatment options that may be the best way to manage these problems.

Hyperactivity and Impulsiveness

The other type of major domain of an ADHD diagnosis is that of the impulsive and hyperactive type. Major presenting problems that you may experience with an impulsive type ADHD diagnosis are that of:

  • Aggressive behaviors.
  • Negativity.
  • Hostility.
  • Need for control.
  • Lack of control over behaviors.
  • Acting without the thought of others.

The difficulties associated with the hyperactive and impulsive type ADHD may be more noticeable than the difficulties associated with the attention type ADHD alone. This type may be causing you or your child more serious issues. The issues stemming from ADHD can be extensive, and many implications of an ADHD diagnosis can stem from the lack of treatment of the disorder.

Combined Type ADHD and Treatment

The combined type ADHD includes the behaviors and issues shared between inattention and hyperactive/impulsive types. It is important for us at ThoughtWise to assess and understand the difficulties that you are facing, and it is important for us that you do not feel alone in the process.
